Action Station

A creative, community-focused hub in the heart of Portobello

Action Porty recently bought the former Portobello Police Station, creating a building for community use, secured for future generations.

We are transforming the space into a vibrant hub of long-term let studios and facilities for local organisations, businesses, artists, makers, and community activity. The new space complements local venues (such as Bellfield, the Town Hall and the Wash House), which host meetings, events and activities. Bringing this complementary activity to Portobello High Street will drive business to high street shops and cafes. We aim to make Portobello an even more attractive place for everyone.

We’re now open for tenant applications!

We now invite applications from potential tenants to be part of the space. We want Action Station to become a welcoming home for:

  • Community groups
  • Community-focused projects
  • Artists and makers
  • Creative practitioners
  • Local businesses

We are looking for tenants who will help create a positive, collaborative, and diverse community within the building.

Porty Community Media, Art Walk Projects, Porty Community Energy, and Portobello High School helped make this project possible and already have rooms as our ‘core tenants’.

The spaces currently available are:

  • Large rooms that can be shared for artists and makers

At present, the building cannot be used for activities requiring unrestricted public access.

Our prices include a service charge covering:

  • Reasonable electricity use
  • Internet (Wi-Fi or wired)
  • Heating
  • Cleaning of shared areas
  • Access to kitchen facilities

Please get in touch via the application form to discuss your requirements in more detail.

We are inviting applications from artists interested in renting studio space. Please contact us by Friday 13 November to be considered in the second round of leases.

At present, we’re unable to open the building fully to the general public until we’ve raised the funds needed to complete essential upgrades that will allow this. Every donation, large or small, helps us move closer to that goal. If you’d like to support the project, you can donate online by card here:

In the meantime, the building will support itself through long-term lets, with a target of reaching 80% occupancy by February 2027.
